[Update] 4chan group take down Visa in latest website attack
In the latest string of DDoS attacks performed by ‘Anonymous’, a group who were born out of notorious message board- 4Chan, have now taken down visa.com & visaeurope.com within the last few hours. The attacks began after Anonymous declared war against those sites who have denied service to WikiLeaks.
The Visa websites were taken offline at 21:00GMT today.
Update: 23:45GMT-Website came back online. Visa have yet to comment.
Update: 00:35GMT -Website again, goes offline. Still no comment from Visa.
Anonymous earlier announced on Twitter their plans to target Visa next, and posted periodic updates right through to their success.
Anonymous’ Twitter account now seems to be suspended. Perhaps a bad move by social media giant ?!
The latest hacking spree with Anonymous never began with this attack on Visa; earlier today they took down PayPal, Mastercard, and several others. PandaLabs earlier released a summary of the hactivists’ activity:
- After pulling the plug on payments to WikiLeaks, Mastercard’s website was taken down and remains out of service.
- Senator Joe Lieberman’s website was taken down for 12 minutes (the first .gov site to be attacked).
- Sarah Palin’s website was taken offline by a small group of Anonymous attackers.
- The group sent spam faxes to Joe Lieberman’s office and to PostFinance.
- PostFinance was attacked the hardest, leaving customers without the ability to conduct online banking.
- They took down the website of the lawyer representing the two women who were allegedly raped/assaulted by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
- The group took down Assange’s Swedish prosecutor’s website.
