Anonymous – WikiLeaks supporters’ press release

Posted on December 10, 2010

anonymous - wikileaks supportersIn the last hour, ‘AnonOps’ (Anonymous) have given a press release, clearing up a few things previously, and wrongly stated in the worldwide media. In the press release, it clearly states that “Anonymous is not a group, but rather an Internet gathering”.

This became clear to us yesterday after links were posted on Twitter, allowing the public to take part in the DDoS attacks being carried out by using a pre-setup DDoS tool, hosted online. Users could simply visit the link, click a button, and the tool would begin ‘Firing’ at the latest target. Although it was reported yesterday that the latest target; api.paypal.com was successful – a later announcement released by PayPal stated otherwise:

our API site api.paypal.com was targeted today.  The attacks were not successful.

They did however follow on to say:

Our customers may see slightly slower load times this week, but the attacks have not significantly impacted payments.

In the press release today, announced by Anonymous, it seems to offer a little reassurance to members of the public – many of which had been worrying that their credit card details and personal information was at risk of being leaked; this was never the case. Anonymous stated:

Anonymous is not a group of hackers.
It then led on to say:
We do not want to steal your personal information or credit card numbers. We also do not seek to
attack critical infrastructure of companies such as Mastercard, Visa, PayPal or Amazon. Our current
goal is to raise awareness about WikiLeaks and the underhanded methods employed by the above
companies to impair WikiLeaks’ ability to function.
Yesterday, Anonymous also wanted to make it pretty clear that they are in no way affiliated with the image board- 4Chan, as previously stated all across the media.
