Facebook now has a dislike button – errm no it doesn’t

Posted on May 16, 2011

facebook dislike buttonLast week ‘remove this app’, this week ‘enable dislike button’ – the phrase maybe different, but it’s the same old security threat on the world’s largest social networking site, Facebook.

Facebook enable dislike button

The latest malicious Facebook app/ nuisance is now here and it’s spreading like wild fire from profile to profile! Many of you that have logged into Facebook at some point today will most probably have seen at least one of your ‘friends’ posting a comment mentioning the new Facebook dislike button. Most likely, they don’t even know they have done it – which is why if you do see any of your Facebook friends posting such links you should drop them a message with a link to this page, so they can understand exactly what they’ve done.

Have you clicked the ‘enable dislike button’ link? If you have – rather than pat yourself on the back or shrug it off as if it doesn’t matter; give yourself a thorough telling off for being so gullible & careless. It’s not just your own privacy you’re interfering with – you’re also puting everyone on your friends list at risk. Remember, there are many ‘non tech savvy’ people using Facebook – many of which are on your friends list & are not clued up on online privacy.

So, let’s be clear: enable dislike button – yay or nay?

Facebook have NOT rolled out a dislike button nor have they announced any plans to introduce the much-requested ‘dislike button’ feature to the site. The ‘enable dislike button’ link is actually a hoax which once clicked, leads you to a webpage which in-turn allows a malicious script to access your Facebook account. Your account will then continue to spread the script in the form of similarly formatted wall posts to your friends profiles.

It may well be doing much more than that! There’s been many malicious apps of late which have been sending instant chat messages to people on your friends list, sending messages, posting to profile walls, and much more. Be observant! Not just for your own sake, but for others around you too.

‘Enable dislike button’ not the only link to look out for

The app seems to be using a very similar source code as another app which was spreading across Facebook profiles only last Thursday (developers/ geeks: here’s the source code).

Unfortunately nobody’s managed to fully understand how the script operates as yet, but we’ll keep you updated on the matter as we become more educated.

For advice on what you can do if you’ve been caught out by this (or any other malicious app), please read the article we posted only a few days ago regarding yet another Facebook security warning: Warning: Be careful when using Facebook apps & games

If you have any further information on this app or it’s malicious code, we’d love to hear from you in the comments below. And remember, do not click any ‘Enable dislike button’ links, nor allow any (unknown) 3rd party Facebook apps to access your account details!
